COLUMBIA — Columbia firefighters spent Sunday morning venting smoke and removing water from the Columbia Mall.
An alarm alerted firefighters at 5:49 a.m. of a fire in a storage area behind the stage in Tryps Children's Theater in the mall, according to a City of Columbia news release. No injuries were reported.
When crews arrived, they found light smoke in the mall. After checking the HVAC system on the roof, crews saw water coming from the door to the theater. The crews forced their way into the theater and found "considerable smoke."
The automatic sprinkler system did control the fire, according to the release, and crews were able to completely put it out with a fire extinguisher.
Damage was estimated at $2,500. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
