PINEVILLE — A southwest Missouri police officer has been charged in the shooting death of an Arkansas man after a chase in late March.

The Joplin Globe reports the first-degree involuntary manslaughter charge was filed Wednesday in McDonald County Circuit Court against 34-year-old South West City officer Brian G. Massa.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol had been investigating the shooting of 26-year-old Bobby L. Stacy of Gravette, Ark., for several months.

Massa had been pursuing Stacy's stolen sport utility vehicle when the SUV crashed March 28. The probable cause statement says Massa fired the fatal shot after the SUV had passed his location and could no longer be a threat.

The McDonald County prosecutor was in court Wednesday afternoon and not immediately able to answer questions about whether Massa had an attorney.
