KANSAS CITY — An escaped Kansas sex offender is back in custody after attempting to register a used car at a Department of Motor Vehicles office in Missouri.

The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office in Kansas said in a news release that George Dudley bought the car after he escaped Monday while at the Wyandotte County Courthouse for a hearing.

The 62-year-old was caught Tuesday afternoon at the DMV office in Kansas City, Mo. Two homeless men and a man with a Kentucky parole violation were in the car with him.

Dudley was convicted in 1997 on three counts of indecent solicitation of a child.

Monday's hearing was to discuss a request for a new lawyer and to complain about his confinement. Dudley had served his sentence but remained civilly committed as a sexual predator.
