Beach at Watkins Mill State Park remains closed

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 | 6:36 p.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY — A swimming beach at a Missouri state park northeast of Kansas City will remain closed because of previous tests showing high levels of E. coli.

The Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that the "beach closed" sign will stay up at Watkins Woolen Mill State Park.

Although water samples taken this week did not show high levels of E. coli, the bacteria levels were still above the state's threshold when averaged with high results from previous weeks.

The park is located near Lawson in Clay County.
