Severe thunderstorm watch includes Columbia

The National Weather Service has placed Boone County under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m. Saturday.

Storms pounded the Kansas City area at 5 p.m. Damaging winds and golf ball-size hail were reported in the eastern suburbs of Independence and Blue Springs.

The storm was moving very slowly eastward at 15 mph. Blue Springs is about 100 miles west of Columbia.
