COLUMBIA — A woman's residence caught fire Sunday morning. Columbia firefighters were called to the home, 706 Ridgeway Ave., at 9:46 a.m.
Katherine Linddell, 80, got out of the house uninjured, a Columbia Fire Department news release stated.
Crew members said light smoke was coming from the front of the house, the release stated. They found a fire in the kitchen, and it was under control in under five minutes. The fire started because of an unknown problem with a window air conditioning unit. The smoke alarms in the house were not working, the release stated.
Fire investigators estimated $50,000 worth of damage to content and structure of the home, the release stated. Most of the damage was in the kitchen, and there was minor spoke damage in other parts of the house. Linddell had renter's insurance, which should cover the cost of damages to her belongings, the release stated.
Linddell is staying with relatives until repairs or other housing arrangements are made.
