COLUMBIA — A former bank manager and treasurer of a defunct Columbia youth soccer league has been indicted on charges of embezzling $30,000.

A federal grand jury indicted Michael Robert Rettke, 41, of Columbia, on Thursday, according to a news release from Beth Phillips, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri.

Rettke was a branch manager at Boone County National Bank in Columbia, where the Central Missouri Soccer League and a Columbia soccer team, the Bears, maintained their accounts. Rettke was the treasurer of the soccer league and the Bears’ coach, according to the indictment.

The indictment alleges that Rettke used his managerial position at the bank to embezzle at least $30,000 from the accounts of the league and the team from 2008 to January 2010. It also alleges that Rettke illegally transferred money from these accounts to his own bank account, pocketed money that should have gone to the league and team accounts, and used money from the accounts to pay his mortgage and for other personal matters, according to the release.

The FBI, Columbia Police Department and IRS investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony P. Gonzalez.

The Central Missouri Soccer League dissolved in March 2010 due to “administrative issues.”
