The Columbia School Board approved the purchase of new language arts materials Monday night. After much discussion and consideration, the school board settled on a program called "Good Habits, Great Readers" by Pearson Education Inc. This is the first time in 18 years that the curriculum has been changed.
The Elementary Language Arts Program Evaluation Committee approved the choice because cities similar to Columbia have used the program and saw increased achievement for minority students. The program passed with a 4-3 vote.
However, some board members expressed doubts about the materials' success rates with minorities. Board member Ines Segert said that the difference in achievement between groups who were using the material and control groups who weren't using the material was not significant.
