TODAY'S QUESTION: What do you think about the new language arts curriculum?

Wednesday, October 13, 2010 | 12:39 p.m. CDT

The Columbia School Board approved the purchase of new language arts materials Monday night. After much discussion and consideration, the school board settled on a program called "Good Habits, Great Readers" by Pearson Education Inc. This is the first time in 18 years that the curriculum has been changed.

The Elementary Language Arts Program Evaluation Committee approved the choice because cities similar to Columbia have used the program and saw increased achievement for minority students. The program passed with a 4-3 vote.

However, some board members expressed doubts about the materials' success rates with minorities. Board member Ines Segert said that the difference in achievement between groups who were using the material and control groups who weren't using the material was not significant.

What do you think about the new language arts program?

("The Elementary Language Arts Program Evaluation Committee approved the choice because cities similar to Columbia have used the program and saw increased achievement for minority students.")

Can the parents of Columbia see this report showing increased achievement for "minority students?"
Does this report also show increased achievement for "majority students" as well, or a decrease?

What is CPS doing to educate parents to read with their little ones?
Are there Parent Skill Workshops, and if so who's attending?
What role can the PTA model do to help illiterate, impatient or unwilling parents partake in giving their early elementary sons and daughters the emotional and cognitive reading readiness and maturity to be educationally receptive and responsive?
How many of these little one's have parents who used drugs and/or alcohol during pregnancy?
When will we realize that people are more important than paper and politics?
