ST. LOUIS — Funeral services take place Wednesday for the Missouri State Highway Patrol pilot killed in last week's crash of a helicopter near St. Louis.

Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered flags lowered Wednesday on public buildings to honor 47-year-old Patrol Sgt. Joseph Schuengel of St. Louis.

Schuengel was alone in the Highway Patrol helicopter when it crashed Friday morning less than two miles from Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, where he was scheduled to land. The cause is under investigation.

A funeral Mass is scheduled at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery.

Visitation was scheduled from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hoffmeister Colonial Mortuary in south St. Louis.
