Columbia police motorcyle collides with car

Saturday, October 23, 2010 | 7:22 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — A collision Saturday between a motorcycle police officer and an elderly woman in her car left both shaken, but mostly unharmed.

At 2:45 p.m., Columbia Police Department Officer Matt Stephens, 35, was riding on West Broadway near the Stadium Boulevard intersection when a Nissan Maxima driven by Doloris Huffine, 79, pulled out of a private driveway. Stephens swerved, but was unable to avoid a collision.

The motorcycle hit the car near the driver's-side door and flipped, throwing Stephens off of the motorcycle. He was transported by ambulance to University Hospital and treated for pain to his right hand and right leg.

Huffine, who was wearing a seatbelt, was uninjured.

Fault had not been established in the accident as of Saturday night, but Columbia Police cited inattention and failure to yield as the causes of the accident.
