JEFFERSON CITY — Members of the newly enlarged Republican majority in the Missouri Senate will be meeting at the Capitol to select their leaders.

Senate Republicans planned to meet behind closed doors Thursday to nominate someone for president pro tem — the chamber's top spot.

Senate Majority Leader Kevin Engler of Farmington traditionally would ascend to that position , but he's being challenged by Sen. Rob Mayer of Dexter, who has support from some conservative colleagues.

Senate Republicans also will be choosing their majority floor leader for the two-year term that starts in January.

In Tuesday's elections, Republicans appeared to gain three seats, which would give them control of 26 of the 34 Senate seats.
