COLUMBIA — Voters in Howard County rejected a 30-cent tax levy Tuesday by a vote of 58-30, Howard County Clerk Kathyrne Harper said.

The proposition passed in Boone County 576-559, but because the Harrisburg School District falls in Howard County as well, citizens were given the opportunity to vote.

The total vote was 617-606. A recount is possible, Harper said. If the official numbers are within 1 percent, the School District can call for a recount.

According to the Harrisburg School District website, the levy, called Proposition 1, would have been used to help prevent staff reductions and sustain current programs during times of economic trouble.

Lynn Proctor, superintendent of the Harrisburg R-VIII School District, said the measure was defeated by less than 1 percent overall, but official numbers have not yet been reported.
