COLUMBIA – The Columbia School Board announced at its meeting Monday that the name of the new high school has been chosen: Muriel Williams Battle High School.
A recommendation said the high school be named after not only Muriel but her husband, Eliot Battle, as well. Eliot Battle, 86, requested that his name be taken off. Guidelines discourage naming buildings after living people, according to a previous Missourian report.
The Battles worked to overcome segregation in schools. Muriel Battle died in 2003.
The other top two recommendations were Neil Aslin and Lakewood. At the board meeting Monday, Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education Wanda Brown recommended Aslin's name for the expanded district administration building at 1818 W. Worley St.
