COLUMBIA — A 31-year-old man is suspected of lighting a fire in a bathroom in The Blue Note on Monday night.

Brendan William Orscheln of 4703 Bethel St. was arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson and was held in the Boone County Jail on $250,000 bond.

Employees at the music venue told owner Richard King that Orscheln had mentioned Columbia's no-smoking ordinance and then went into the bathroom to smoke. King was in his office during the incident.

King does not estimate the damages to be too costly.

“We estimated that it wasn’t over $500 worth of damages,” King said. “... There wasn’t a whole lot that could burn.”

King also said the act was inexcusable and the he plans to legally ban Orscheln from the venue.

“It’s a very serious crime,” King said.

Orscheln was still in the Boone County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.

31 years old???? Doofus got more than he bargained for, I bet. That's one expensive prank, $250,000 bond. I hope they prosecute as this might have been just the beginning. Arsonists often escalate.

Did he intentionally light a fire, or inadvertently cause one in the trashcan or something?

@Kenny,
Employees at the music venue told owner Richard King that Orscheln had mentioned Columbia's no-smoking ordinance and then went into the bathroom to smoke.

I'm willing to bet he smoked and didn't get it out all the way before tossing it in the trash. At most, he should get the max fine for smoking in a public building, not be allowed back in the Blue Note and pay damages. Not be held on $250k bond.

Can they sue the cigarette maker? Maybe the lighter manufacturer?

That concert was smokin' hot!
