EUREKA — A sport utility vehicle collided with a school bus near St. Louis and burst into flames, sending six children to the hospital.

The wreck happened about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on Highway FF near Eureka, about 25 miles from St. Louis. Scott Barthelmass of the Eureka Fire Department says the SUV driver was trapped in the burning vehicle. He did not know if the driver was badly injured.

Details about injuries to the students were also unavailable.

The bus was carrying students from the Rockwood School District.

Barthelmass says it appeared that the SUV was on the wrong side of the road.

Students were taken to St. John's Mercy Medical Center. Calls seeking comment from the hospital and from the school district were not immediately returned.
