“I’m excited to have this opportunity to provide additional service to the city,” Blattel said in a news release.

Blattel has served as the internal auditor for two and a half years. His salary will increase from about $68,000 to $95,000, according to the release.

The internal auditor position will not be filled during Blattel’s interim appointment, because he will be returning to the position once a finance director has been named.

City spokeswoman Toni Messina said there was no firm timetable to the fill the finance director position. Messina said the city hopes to have a new finance director by early spring.

I am saddened to see Lori Fleming go. She was a very hard working, dedicated, and fairminded professional. I did not have a lot of dealings with her, but the times I did have occasion to deal with her I was always very impressed with her professionalism. Columbia is losing a true asset to city government.
