Columbia College volleyball opens national tournament with win

The Columbia College volleyball team won its first match at the NAIA national tournament Tuesday, 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 over Oklahoma City University.

The Cougars (38-2) were led by American Midwest Conference player of the year Paula Ferreira, who dished out 45 assists in the three-game sweep. Outside hitter Vesna Trivunovic also performed well for the Cougars, knocking down 15 kills in 32 attempts.

The match against the Stars (23-12) was the first of three matches in pool play for the Cougars at the tournament at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa. If they finish in the top two of the four teams in their pool, they will move on to single elimination competition starting Dec. 3.

The Cougars return to action at 1 p.m. on Wednesday against Rocky Mountain College. Pool play wraps up at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday when Columbia College plays No. 8 ranked Azusa Pacific.
