Missouri football bowl possibilities

COLUMBIA — The Missouri Tigers football team will announce its bowl decision Sunday. On Tuesday, Missouri was passed over by Texas A&M for a Cotton Bowl bid. Here are some of the bowl possibilities for the Tigers:

The Insight Bowl

Where:  Tempe, Ariz.

When: 9 p.m. Dec. 28

Venue: Sun Devil Stadium, 500 E. Veterans Way 

Capacity: 71,706

History:  1998 — Mizzou defeated West Virginia Mountaineers 34-31

City locations of interest: Four Peaks Brewery, Rula Bula and Nello's

Weather prediction: Between 39 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit

The Bridgeport Education Holiday Bowl

Where: San Diego

When: 7 p.m. Dec. 30

Venue: Qualcomm Stadium, 9449 Friars Road

Capacity: 70,561 

History: 1997 — Mizzou lost to Colorado State 35-24; 1983 — Mizzou lost to Brigham Young University 21-17

City locations of interest: Gaslamp Quarter, El Indio and the San Diego Zoo

Weather prediction: Between 49 and 65 degrees Fahrenheit

The Valero Alamo Bowl

Where: San Antonio

When: 8 p.m. Dec. 29

Venue: The Alamodome, 100 Montana St. 

Capacity: 65,000

History: 2008 — Mizzou beat Northwestern 30-23

City locations of interest: Carmens De La Calle Café, Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club and Club Rio

Weather prediction: Between 39 and 62 degrees Fahrenheit

I suppose this shows the drawback of the automatic bowl matchups. Here is Missouri, a 2-loss team, looking at the prospect of playing one team that has lost five games (Michigan), another that has lost 6 or 7 (Washington). All the talking heads of sports media keep harping about how the entire season is sort of like a playoff. Really?

What would really be intriguing is to break the mold, and design a special matchup between Missouri and Boise State.
