FULTON — The owner of a short-line railroad in central Missouri says he will reopen the line if he finds enough interest for rail shipping in the Fulton area.

Mike Williams of Richmond has owned the 27-mile railroad spur between Fulton and Mexico, Mo., for three years. His company, Ozark Valley Railroad, owns short-line railroads in other states.

The Fulton Sun reported Tuesday that a study conducted two years ago estimated it would cost between $3 million to $5 million to renovate the land.

Williams says he thinks he can restore the line for $1 million to $2 million. He says he will proceed with the plan if he receives enough assurances from Fulton-area firms that they want to ship freight and raw materials on the line.
