COLUMBIA — The Hickman girls basketball team overcame a tough third quarter to beat visiting Jefferson City 52-49 on Tuesday night.
The Kewpies trailed 22-18 at halftime, but the Jays surged to a 20-point lead early in the third quarter before Hickman started to turn things around.
The Kewpies pulled within 13 by the end of the third quarter, kept the momentum and pushed ahead 48-47 with about two minutes to play. Missed shots by Jefferson City coupled with free throws from Aqua Corpening and Claire Ortbals kept Hickman in front.
"I'm just very proud of out kids that they didn't quit," Hickman coach Tonya Mirts said.
Corpening and Jade Holly led Hickman (7-3) with 18 points apiece.
