Break Time fire shuts down traffic

Thursday, January 20, 2011 | 5:44 p.m. CST

COLUMBIA — A fire at the Break Time gas station on Business Loop 70 East prompted emergency crews to temporarily close the northbound lane of Garth Avenue and the eastbound lane of Business Loop 70.

“There was a very small fire up in the canopy above the gas pumps that looked to be attributed to the canopy lighting,” Columbia Fire Department spokesman Steven Sapp said.

Emergency responders received the call alerting them of the fire at 3:48 p.m. Thursday, he said.

No one was injured by the fire.

Lights in a red, neon stripe on the canopy probably caused the fire, Sapp said. “I would guess the damage is less than $500,” he said.

Several emergency vehicles were dispatched to deal with the fire, but only one fire truck was needed to extinguish it. A hose line and just a few gallons of water were used to put out the fire in two minutes, Sapp said.
