COLUMBIA —  The fire that killed a 43-year-old Columbia man was ruled an accident.

Jerry G. Parker died Saturday evening after his trailer caught fire. He was dead on the scene.

The Boone County Fire Protection District, the state of Missouri fire marshall, the Boone County Sheriff's Department and the medical examiner conducted an investigation and concluded the fire started on a living room couch, according to a news release from the fire district.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. The investigation could not rule out improper disposal of smoking materials as the probable cause of the fire, the release stated.
