Man arrested in connection to Jefferson Street shooting

COLUMBIA — Police arrested Jermell Lamar Burnett on Saturday in connection with a shooting that occurred Thursday on the 1000 block of Jefferson Street, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

The release said officers attempted to locate Burnett on Saturday evening at 1108 N. Eighth St. When they arrived, Burnett opened the door and was arrested.  No one was injured in the Thursday night shooting.

Burnett consented to a search of the residence, where police found drug paraphernalia and cocaine, according to the release.

The release said Burnett was arrested on suspicion of:

  • Four counts of armed criminal action.
  • Four counts of first-degree assault.
  • Felony and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police were still looking for information on the motive for the shooting.
