Participants rush into the cold water of Stephens Lake Saturday in the 2011 Special Olympics Polar Plunge.

COLUMBIA — The Polar Plunge is the unique fundraising tool of the Special Olympics in Columbia. Teams raise money to enter and are rewarded with the opportunity to plunge into cold, unwelcoming waters, complete with coordinated costumes.

Columbia residents turned out in droves dressed as Spartan warriors, superheroes and even Mario Kart characters — complete with their vehicles.

Take the plunge with the Missourian photographers who documented the event. If you're really searching for the full experience, try watching this from an ice bath. That may be as close to the real thing as you can get.
