COLUMBIA — Investigators have identified the woman burned in an apartment fire on Wednesday night as 54-year-old Albina Lewis.
Lewis escaped a fire in her home at Forest Village Apartments. A neighbor discovered her outside her apartment building with significant burns. She is being treated at University Hospital's George D. Peak Memorial Burn and Wound Center.
The Columbia Fire Department reported in a news release Wednesday that Lewis had suffered life-threatening injuries.
Investigators were unable to speak with Lewis. The department said in a statement this morning that the fire began on or near a sofa in the living room of the apartment. The cause remained unknown. Damages were estimated at $50,000.
Lewis is the only person who lives in the apartment. The fire department said there were smoke alarms in the apartment, but investigators didn't know whether they alerted Lewis to the fire.
