KANSAS CITY — Kansas City police say a 64-year-old man suspected in a hit-and-run accident that badly injured a 3-year-old boy has surrendered.

The boy suffered what police called major head injuries when he struck late Tuesday afternoon outside his home in eastern Kansas City. Police say the child remained hospitalized in grave condition Wednesday.

Witnesses reported that a van driven by an older white man hit the boy and drove off.

Authorities say the 64-year-old man turned himself in Wednesday afternoon at the police department in suburban Raytown. The van he was driving has also been recovered.

Police said charges are expected to be filed Thursday.
