West Junior High School is part of the Columbia Public Schools. Muriel Battle served the school from its opening in 1961 until her retirement in 1991 as a social studies teacher, department chairwoman, assistant principal and principal.

Battle, who also served as associate superintendent for secondary education for Columbia Public Schools, is commemorated with a portrait at the entrance of West Junior High. The school’s motto during her time was, “We’re glad you’re here,” and as the Columbia Public Schools’ website states, “It is hoped that all who enter our school will view her portrait and be reminded that West has been and will always be a school rich in heritage, strong in purpose, and ready for the challenges that lie ahead.”
