COLUMBIA — Columbia police assisted the Mexico, Mo., Public Safety Department in arresting an Auxvasse man in connection with a sexual assault Tuesday in Mexico, according to a department news release.

Mexico Public Safety learned Thursday that Lorne Beers, 44, had been arrested in Columbia for a number of offenses, the release stated.

At about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Mexico Public Safety responded to the report of a sexual assault at the Walmart in the 4800 block of South Clark Street, the release stated. A 24-year-old Mexico woman said she was shopping when a man came up to her and began inappropriately touching the outside of her clothes and making inappropriate comments before he left the store, according to the release.

Mexico Public Safety plans to forward the case to the Audrain County prosecutor to obtain a warrant, the release stated.
