COLUMBIA — Jan Beckett won the race for a five-year term on the Boone Hospital Board of Trustees in the Tuesday election.

With 63.54 percent of the vote, Beckett, a former surgical intensive care nurse at Boone Hospital Center, beat incumbent H. Jerry Murrell, who served on the board for10 years and was the current board's only practicing physician. During her campaign, Beckett boasted a new perspective and her medical background as her strengths.

“I think the campaign went very well,” Beckett said. “I’m very proud of the way we both handled our campaigns because we’re friends and we kept it at a friendly level.”

Taking care of people has been her passion for most of her adult life, Beckett said. Aside from nursing, she was a medical office manager and is a member of the safety committee and the foundation community advisory board at Boone Hospital Center.

“I look forward to the opportunities and challenges in future,” Beckett said about her upcoming term. “There are a lot of issues we’ll struggle with, but I’m looking forward to it.”

The five trustees meet monthly to review finances and other hospital issues. The hospital administrators take care of the day-to-day running of the hospital, and the board of trustees tackles larger issues and long-term projects.  The board was involved with two of the largest additions to Boone Hospital Center — the William Street parking garage, completed in May 2009, and the new patient tower, to be completed later this spring.

“A hospital is made of bricks and mortar and we have to make sure that is being taken care of,” Beckett said.
