CALIFORNIA, Mo. — Investigators are looking into the death of a man whose body was found in an alley near the downtown area of California, Mo.

Police say contractors working on a nearby house found the body early Thursday. The Jefferson City News-Tribune reports that the man's face was badly beaten. He appeared to be in his mid-20s to mid-30s but has not been identified.

An autopsy will be performed in Columbia.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is assisting the California Police Department and the Moniteau County Sheriff's Department in the investigation.
