Sheriff: Bad divorce led to triple slaying-suicide

MODENA — Officials said a northwest Missouri man who killed three people before turning the gun on himself was going through a bitter divorce, but they didn't think he would take such drastic actions.

Mercer County Sheriff Steve Stockman said 50-year-old John Hufford fatally shot two people Saturday afternoon outside a rural Modena home where his wife had been staying. Stockman told the St. Joseph News-Press that Hufford then went into the home, walked past his 2-year-old daughter and found his wife, 37-year-old Misty Hufford, in an upstairs storage room, where he killed her.

John Hufford then walked past his daughter again before getting into his pickup truck and fatally shooting himself, according to authorities.

Stockman said authorities knew about problems between the couple but didn't think John Hufford would act out so violently.
