Neil Gavett prepares the ground for a poppy bed that he will plant in his yard. Gavett said he’s attempted to plant poppy beds before but that his efforts weren’t as successful due to poor drainage of the Missouri clay soil.

Gardeners made use of the fine spring weather by planting poppies Thursday.

Neil Gavett picks up the dirt and weeds he dug up while preparing the ground for a poppy bed he will plant in his yard.
