COLUMBIA — Severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening are expected for the Columbia area.

The anticipated storms could bring hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service.

The Office of Emergency Management will activate the outdoor sirens in the event of a tornado warning and encouraged residents to have a weather radio nearby, according to a city news release. Residents were advised to review safety plans for possible severe weather before the storms reach the area.

The Office of Emergency Management said residents shouldn’t call 911 during a storm except in a life-threatening emergency. Calls should instead be directed to the Public Safety Joint Communication Center's non-emergency line at 442-6131.
