Missouri Senate approves proposal to extend term limits

Thursday, April 28, 2011 | 11:59 a.m. CDT

JEFFERSON CITY — Missouri voters would be asked to change the state's term limits for lawmakers under a proposed constitutional amendment passed by the state Senate.

State House and Senate members currently are limited to eight years in each chamber. The proposal by Sen. Tim Green, D-St. Louis, would ask voters in 2012 whether to change that to allow a total of 16 years in the Legislature. Those 16 years could be spent entirely in one chamber or split in any way among the two bodies.

The Senate passed the measure 29-4 on Thursday, sending it to the House.

Missouri voters approved term limits in 1992.

This must not pass! We voted for term limits to stop the abuses of power caused by politicians staying in office too long. The current law needs to remain in effect. This is a brazen attempt to continue to establish a permanent job system for politicians.

I agree with Jimmy. Proposed by a D', passed by majority R's. Which one thinks the people have changed their minds? Don't get too comfortable, Republicans, your terms can end at the ballot box, every time.

Is it any wonder the bill is sponsored by Senator Tim Green? He terms out unless this bill is passed into law.
He was elected to the Senate in 2004,and prior served in the House of Representatives from 1989 - 2002. I've talked to him several times in Jeff City and he is one of the most jaded Senators there. Last time I visited his office, I asked him to speak on the floor in support of an issue that he was planning on voting for. He said and I quote: "I go in and cast my vote but I'm not going to fight for the issue. It's a losing battle while the Senate is under Repulican Control."
But faced with losing his job from term limits..... well, I guess keeping his job is worth speaking up for in his eyes. (It's blatantly obvious that the legislators Could care less about what the voters think... the only line on a voter ballot they care about is the line where their name is printed.)
So of course Sen Green cares about extending term limits.... as the issue affects his bank account!
Our legislators disgusting behaviors need to stop. It's all about money & power. God help our state if it passes the House & Nixon signs this crap bill.
