Rock Bridge's Will Echelmeier lines up his putt on the sixth hole at A.L. Gustin Golf Course in Wednesday's Class 4 sectional competition. Echelmeier finished in a three-way tie for 11th with a 8-over par 78 for the Bruins, who won the five-team event.

COLUMBIA — The family of Hickman senior Tyler Daly couldn't help laughing.

Sabra Daly was taking a photo of her son and senior teammate Cruz Buchanan in front of the scoreboard after Wednesday's Class 4 boys golf sectional at A.L. Gustin Golf Course. Buchanan, though, was trying to hide something.

As they stood in front of the scoreboard, Buchanan, who had finished five strokes behind Tyler Daly, attempted to cover his score with his hand.

No matter, both advanced to this season's Class 4 state championship tournament. Daly shot a 5-over-par 75 to place third, and Buchanan shot a 10-over-par 80 to tie for 16th, earning them individual berths to this year's state event set for May 16 and 17 at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.

Rock Bridge won the sectional to advance as a team. The Bruins' Wilson Sundvold shot a 2-over-par 72 to place second and lead Rock Bridge to a 305-315 victory over second-place Ozark. Glendale's Rayvaun Eugene Christenson placed first with a 1-under 69.

It will be Buchanan and Daly's first year going to the state championship together, and Hickman coach Carol Kyd was overjoyed about it.

"They've been friends forever, so this will be the icing on the cake," Kyd said. "I think they'll do well. They have the determination."

Rock Bridge coach Doug Daniels, who saw his team finish second at last season's state tournament, said he would have liked his team to break 300 at the sectional.

"I thought we could have shot a 296, but maybe the course was difficult," said Daniels, who quickly and matter-of-factly added: "I didn’t think it was."

Rock Bridge's Tyler Kolb finished in a five-way tie for sixth with a 77, and teammates William Echelmeier and Austin Evans landed in a three-way tie for 11th with 78s. Hickman's Matthew Garner did not make the cut for the state competition after finishing in a two-way tie for 30th with an 85.
