COLUMBIA — Two men were sent to University Hospital after two cars collided on Rollins Road, 1/2 mile east of Stadium Boulevard.

A mid-sized gray car heading south on Maplewood Drive and a red SUV rounding the corner of Rollins Road to head north on Maplewood Drive collided around 8 p.m. Thursday, Columbia Police Sgt. Barbara Book said. The two passengers of the gray car were taken to the hospital with neck and back injuries.

Book said police attempted to stop the driver of the SUV for speeding near Stadium and Rollins shortly before he was involved in the crash.

"One of our officers attempted to stop the vehicle," Book said. "They failed to stop, and the officer didn't continue to chase him because he was driving too fast, and about a minute later (the officer) continued down Rollins and found the accident."

After the accident, the driver of the SUV attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended and taken into custody by police officers.

Police were not able to release the name of the driver of the SUV or the two men sent to the hospital.
