COLUMBIA — Three men were assaulted with weapons in a street fight early Wednesday in northwest Columbia.

This is what police said happened: The fight began at 218 W. Sexton Road when Brian Keith Hanson Jr., 29, was walking down the street. Charvez Markel Smith, 21, jumped out of his own car and retrieved an axe from the trunk of the vehicle, said Latisha Stroer, public information officer for the Columbia Police Department.

Stroer said Hanson responded by pulling a knife on Smith and another man who got involved.

“Hanson cut both Smith and the man who tried to intervene,” Stroer said. “Smith, in turn, ran after Hanson wielding the axe, cutting his finger."

Stroer said Hanson ran to a house at 705 Banks Ave., where the owner of the residence let Hanson in and locked both doors.

“The owner saw Smith banging on the door and holding the axe,” Stroer said. “He also noticed axe marks on the door.”

Police arrived along with medical personnel, who determined that none of the men involved needed treatment.

Smith was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, second-degree armed criminal action and second-degree property damage. His total bond was set at $25,000.

Hanson was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action, with total bond set at $84,000.

The moral of this story: Don't bring a knife to an axe fight.

I guess a law abading citizen would just let the axe weilding maniac chop them up without defending themselves???
I could see the one count for the guy that tried to intervene, depending on how unbiased the intervention was, but to charge the guy with assault for pulling a knife after a guy has stopped his car and jumped out and threatened him with an axe seems off to me.
Must be more to the story...
