ROLLA — A Missouri Army colonel says the gunman who broke onto Fort Leonard Wood on Thursday and later fired on police during an interstate highway shootout was not targeting the military installation.
Post commander Col. Charles Williams says 31-year-old Cody Willcoxson got lost amid Interstate 44 highway construction before turning into the fort.
Willcoxson drove through a security gate when he was questioned by military police. That was the start of a four-hour, 40-mile chase and manhunt that led to the shutdown of a Missouri college campus where he crashed his car.
Willcoxson faces felony charges of assaulting an officer, resisting arrest and armed criminal action. More charges are expected.
