CHILLICOTHE — A northwest Missouri sheriff believes he has found a way to save the county some money on laundry.
Inmates at Livingston County Jail are making their own detergent from a recipe Sheriff Steve Cox got from a friend.
KQTV reports the sheriff says inmates were surprised at how easy it was to make the liquid detergent with things like bar soap, borax and washing soda.
Cox says the cost averages out to about 1.2 cents per load, compared with the 20 cents per load the jail had been paying for detergent.
That means a week's worth of laundry, about 60 loads, can be cleaned for about 72 cents.
Cox says the savings will add up to about $1,000 a year.
