Ten Columbia boards and commissions have openings

COLUMBIA — The Columbia City Clerk is accepting applications to fill 20 vacancies for 10 city boards and commissions.

Applicants can submit their applications to the City Clerk's office at 701 E. Broadway or online through the city's website.

All applications must be received by the clerk's office by noon on June 3.

Here are the current boards and commissions openings:

  • Board of Mechanical Examiners - Two vacancies

One member must be a general contractor not in the mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration contracting business and one member must be an HVACR journeyman mechanic.

The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. The term expires June 17, 2014.

Meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month.

  • Building and Construction Codes Commission - Four vacancies

One alternate is needed for each of the following categories: professional engineer with experience in electrical or mechanical engineering, master plumber, fire expert and electrician.

The commission reviews and makes recommendations related to building construction codes.  The term for the fire expert expires Aug. 11, 2011. The term for the electrician expires Aug. 1, 2012, and the terms for the professional engineer and master plumber expires Aug. 1, 2013.

Meetings are held at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month.

  • Library District Board - Three vacancies

Applicants must live within the Columbia Library District and can hold no other city government office or position.

Board duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing expenditures of library fund monies. Members will be appointed by the mayor with terms that expire June 30, 2014.

Meetings are held at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday after the second Tuesday of the month , according to City Clerk Sheela Amin.

  • Vision Commission - Two vacancies

Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to the visioning process of creating an informed and engaged community. Candidates will be evaluated on their ability to work with data and understand systematic relationships, the ability to work collaboratively, their management skills, independence, existing membership or positions and contributions to the diversity of the commission. The two vacancies will expire Dec. 15, 2011, and Dec. 15, 2012.

The commission tracks, monitors and assists with the implementation of the visioning process.

Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. on the last Monday of the month.

  • Comprehensive Plan Task Force - Two vacancies

Consideration will be given to applicants with prior involvement in the visioning process of creating an informed and engaged community, prior service on a city commission, professional credentials or participation in a civic, business or professional organization.

The task force advises and assists the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council on all phases of the comprehensive plan development, which includes citizen involvement, public education and outreach, recruitment of volunteers and review of interim products.

Meetings are held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

  • Cultural Affairs Standing Committee on Public Art - One vacancy

Applicants must be a member of the business community.

The committee makes recommendations to the council regarding the city's Percent for Art Program. The term expires July 1, 2014.

Meetings are held as needed.

  • Health Insurance Appeals Board - One vacancy

Applicants must have professional experience in benefits administration for a large organization.

The board hears appeals from the decisions of the employee health plan administrator. The term of the vacancy will expire Feb. 16, 2014.

Meetings are held monthly and are called as needed.

  • Historic Preservation Commission - One vacancy

Applicants must be active in historic preservation or have an interest in historic preservation and represent disciplines such as architecture, design, law, real estate appraisal, construction and general contracting.

The commission makes recommendation to the council regarding historically-significant structures. The term expires Sept. 1, 2012.

Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

  • Storm Water Advisory Commission - Two vacancies

Applicants must be qualified voters and residents of the city at least one year prior to appointment and agree with the concept and principles of municipal stormwater management that ensures efficient management of the system. The commission's common goal is sound management of the storm water utility.

The commission advises staff with regard to policy and long-range goals in all matters concerning stormwater utility. The terms of the vacancies will expire June 30, 2013.

Meetings are held as needed.

  • Water and Light Advisory Board - Two vacancies

Applicants must be qualified voters and residents of the city for at least one year prior to the appointment and agree with the concept and principals of municipal operation of the water and light system. The board's common goal is sound management of water and light utilities.

The board advises the council on the operations and needs of the city's water and light system. The terms of the vacancies will expire June 30, 2015.

Meetings are held at 8 a.m. on the first Tuesday of the month.
