COLUMBIA — Missouri Task Force 1, a division of the Boone County Fire Protection District, was on the ground early Monday morning searching for victims of the deadly tornado in Joplin.
“They are finding complete devastation and destruction and several human remains,” Battalion Chief Gale Blomenkamp said.
The advance team of five members reached Joplin around midnight, made contact with the local incident commander and began planning the search-and-rescue mission, he said. The remaining 80 members, hauling more than 100,000 pounds of equipment, arrived just before 3 a.m.
By 3:15 a.m, Task Force 1 had five search-and-rescue teams searching a three-block area.
