COLUMBIA – Charvez Markel Smith, 21, was granted a continuance at a preliminary hearing Tuesday afternoon.

Smith was arrested in May on suspicion of unlawful use of a weapon.

Police said Brian Keith Hanson Jr., 29, was walking down the road when Smith got out of his car and took out an axe from his trunk, according to a previous Missourian report. Hanson reacted by pulling a knife on Smith, the Missourian report stated.

Smith then ran to a nearby house where the owner let him inside until police arrived, the Missourian report stated.

Another hearing date has not been set. Smith remains in the Boone County Jail.
