Severe weather sweeps through southeast Missouri

Wednesday, May 25, 2011 | 5:37 p.m. CDT

ELLSINORE — Damage to buildings was reported as violent storms packing funnel clouds and high winds swept through southeastern Missouri.

Law enforcement agencies report one home destroyed in the rural Carter County town of Ellsinore, where trees and debris are blocking U.S. 60, and power is out in nearby Grandin, where a church sustained damage.

The destruction struck the areas just before 4 p.m., around the time a tornado was reported, the National Weather Service said. Meteorologist Beverly Poole at the service's office in Paducah, Ky., said debris was falling from the sky.

A Carter County sheriff's dispatcher said a second round of powerful storms was expected around 4:30 p.m. and could hamper efforts to assess the damage.
