Salute to Veterans Airshow and Parade among Memorial Day weekend events

COLUMBIA — Looking for something to do this weekend? The Salute to Veterans Corporation is hosting a weekend of events to honor veterans, including the 23rd annual Salute to Veterans Airshow. Here is more information to help coordinate your Memorial Day weekend:

Saturday and Sunday

Salute to Veterans Airshow

The 23rd annual Salute to Veterans Airshow will feature demonstration teams, showcase military aircraft and host several special events throughout the weekend.

There will be limited on-site parking, and spectators are encouraged to take the shuttle. Shuttles will begin running at 9:15 a.m., and will depart from the Hearnes Center on Stadium Boulevard and the Jefferson City Memorial Airport. Round-trip shuttle rides cost $3, and the shuttles will run continuously throughout each day.

Coolers, picnic baskets, alcohol, bicycles and pets are not allowed, and smoking is not permitted inside the gates. No general seating will be available, and spectators are encouraged to bring folding chairs.

Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet

  • When: 5:30 p.m.
  • Where: Hearnes Center
  • Cost: Tickets are $40 per person. For reservations, call (573) 449-0018.

The Salute to Veterans Corporation invites the public to attend the banquet honoring military guests. The event includes an auction for the organization's Endowment Fund. The Military Demonstration Teams will be introduced, and honored military guests will be recognized.



Salute to Veterans Parade

  • When: 9:55 a.m.
  • Where: Downtown on Broadway
  • Cost: Free

Members of the U.S. Army 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” and Canadian Forces “Skyhawks” will be parachuting into different intersections on Broadway during the Salute to Veterans Parade. The parade honors those who have served and are currently serving in the military.


Military Ceremony

  • When: 10:45 a.m.
  • Where: Boone County Courthouse
  • Cost: Free

The ceremony will begin immediately following the Salute to Veterans Parade with a performance from the Columbia Community Band and a short speech about the meaning of Memorial Day made by the ranking military officer. Following the speech, the Bagpipers Band will play “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by a 21-gun salute. The Echo Taps will bring the ceremony to a close.
