LETTER: Red Cross praises mid-Missouri for help in Joplin

Friday, June 3, 2011 | 5:35 p.m. CDT; updated 11:15 a.m. CDT, Thursday, June 16, 2011

When disaster strikes and a call goes out for help, mid-Missourians need look no farther than to their neighbors and the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross for immediate and ongoing assistance.

The response to recent tornadoes is a shining example of mid-Missouri’s giving spirit.

Since the moment news of the deadly twister in Joplin reached mid-Missouri, hundreds of people have donated tens of thousands of dollars to supplement Red Cross disaster relief efforts in the devastated city. Days later, when a tornado tore apart sections of Sedalia, mid-Missourians did not blink when asked to help there.

As always, the Capital Area Chapter, which serves 21 mid-Missouri counties, is ready to respond to any disaster, no matter the size or location.

The chapter, which has volunteers and equipment in Joplin, is able to respond quickly when emergencies happen thanks to our generous donors. Money donated to the chapter gives our highly trained and dedicated disaster action team volunteers the resources they need to alleviate human suffering right here in mid-Missouri cities, towns and neighborhoods.

The money that stays with the chapter provides disaster victims with the immediate necessities needed to begin the recovery process. We meet not only physical needs — food, clothing and shelter — but we have volunteers trained to provide emotional support. Our volunteers also conduct follow-up interviews with clients to ensure their recovery continues after the initial shock.

Locally, the Capital Area Chapter is a proud member agency of the United Way of Central Missouri, which makes significant investments every year in Red Cross services.

Still, it is through individual and corporate donations that the chapter continues to offer the level of service mid-Missouri has come to expect.

Thank you to all who have donated. We rely on your continued support.

Beth Bauer is the chief executive officer of the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross in Jefferson City.
