COLUMBIA — A man was arrested early Tuesday morning on suspicion of robbing and sodomizing a woman near the 300 block of Proctor Drive.

Police were dispatched to the scene at 3:35 a.m. The victim said two men on bikes rode past her, and one doubled back and asked to use her cell phone. After taking the woman's purse, the suspect proceeded to sodomize her. She escaped and found help at a nearby location, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

Officers found and identified David Lee Maxwell and the other man on their bicycles on Creasy Springs Road, just north of Proctor Drive. They discovered a trash bag containing the victim's stolen property and a car stereo belonging to an unidentified owner.

Police arrested Maxwell on charges of second-degree robbery and forcible sodomy. The other man was released.
