Onion spill clogs St. Louis roadways

Thursday, June 23, 2011 | 12:03 p.m. CDT

ST. LOUIS — The morning commute in St. Louis is sometimes bad enough to cry about. An incident Thursday may have literally left drivers in tears.

A truck lost a load of onions on Interstate 55 near downtown St. Louis on Thursday morning, near the intersection of I-55 and Interstate 44. KMOX Radio reports that the incident caused a significant backup on both interstates.

Crews cleared the onions to the shoulder, then a street sweeper cleaned the juice left over from the hundreds of onions that splattered the pavement and were run over by vehicles.
