LETTER: Police, firefighters did great job helping neighbor during fire

Thursday, June 30, 2011 | 3:45 p.m. CDT

I am writing to acknowledge and thank the Columbia Fire Department and the Police Department for how they handled the fire and stand-off at the Park de Ville Place condominiums last Monday.

My mother lives next-door to where the arson took place. She is 87 years old and legally blind. The policemen who aided her in evacuating her premises were kind, understanding and efficient.

My mother made the policemen aware that there were two small family dogs that needed to be evacuated also, and these two animals were brought out with her to safety. After the fire was out and the immediate crisis over, I needed to enter the premises to get some items for her relocation, and the firefighters who assisted me were extremely helpful.

The men and women from both these departments were professional and compassionate as they performed their duties.

George Frissell lives in Columbia.
