UPDATE: Parks and Recreation employee William Bell dies in accident

COLUMBIA — Parks and Recreation Department employee William Bell, 23, died Friday morning in a work-related accident along the MKT Trail.

This was the first workplace fatality in the department, according to a statement released Friday afternoon by the department.

Bell was a part-time seasonal employee and had worked for the department since 2007, according to the statement. Bell regularly worked on trails, planted and removed trees, mowed parks and worked with volunteers.

The accident is currently under investigation by the Columbia Police Department and the city's risk management department.
