COLUMBIA — A shootout in southern Columbia on Friday morning sent one man to the hospital with multiple bullet wounds, police reported.

Police officers were dispatched at 1:54 a.m. to an area near Northampton Drive and Bearfield Road to investigate a report of two men shooting at each other, according to a news release from the Columbia Police Department.

Witnesses told police when they arrived on the scene that a 20-year-old man had been taken to the University Hospital emergency room.

The victim was shot in the right hand and shoulder. His wounds were not life-threatening.

Detectives and the forensic evidence team discovered several shell casings in the 2400 block of Northampton Drive, where they think the shooting began, according to the news release. They are still looking for a possible suspect and motive, and no arrests have been made.
